Retention Holster Levels, Explained

“Level II” and “Level III” get thrown around like grades, but they describe how many active locks stand between a grabbing hand and your pistol. Here's the whole ladder.

Retention level counts the active retention devices a holster uses — mechanisms that require a deliberate action to release, beyond the friction of the holster body itself.

Level I — passive retention

The pistol is held by fit and adjustable tension alone. There's no lever to defeat, which makes the draw fast and the holster thin enough to conceal. This is the standard for plainclothes, detective, and off-duty carry, where speed and concealment outrank a physical grab.

Level II — one active lock

Add a single active device: a thumb break, Safariland's ALS, Blackhawk's T-Series thumb release, or a Safariland GLS grip lock. You clear it as a natural part of the draw stroke. For most uniformed carry, Level II is the working baseline — enough resistance to slow a snatch, little enough to stay fast with training.

The ALS (Automatic Locking System) engages automatically when you re-holster — you never have to think about arming it. That “set it on the way in” behavior is a big reason ALS became the duty default.

Level III — two or more active locks

Stack retention: a common Level III duty rig pairs ALS with the SLS rotating hood that covers the rear of the slide. Two independent actions are required before the gun clears. Many agencies mandate Level III for uniformed open carry, because the pistol is visible and reachable for an entire shift.

How to choose your level

  • Uniformed patrol, open carry: Level II minimum; Level III if policy requires or the assignment is high-contact.
  • Plainclothes / detective: Level I–II, prioritizing concealment and access.
  • Off-duty: Level I is common — concealment and a consistent draw matter most.

Whatever the level, match the holster to your exact setup — pistol model, weapon light, and optic. A light-bearing or optic-cut gun needs a shell cut for it.
