Why duty changes the answer
For civilian carry, the G19 wins on concealment. On a duty belt nothing is hidden. What counts there is shootability under stress, capacity, and a full grip that's easy to acquire from a retention holster. Those all favor the G17.
Grip
A full-length grip gives every finger a place to go. That helps with recoil control and a consistent draw, especially with gloves or wet hands.
Sight radius
A longer slide means more distance between the iron sights, which makes small aiming errors easier to see. This matters less on a red-dot pistol, which is one more reason the MOS versions are worth considering.
Capacity
Two more rounds per magazine, carried across three magazines on the belt, adds up.
The case for the 19 anyway
A single-gun policy is simpler. If you're working plainclothes, carrying off duty, or your agency issues one model for every assignment, the G19 covers everything. Your holster, magazines and training carry over to every role.
The Glock 47 option
The G47 MOS combines a full-size 17-round platform with an optics cut. It was designed so its slide can swap onto G19 and G45 frames. For agencies that want one slide system across frame sizes, that's the point.
