Why enclosed optics matter for duty
Open-emitter pistol dots can have their emitter blocked by rain, snow, mud or lint. Enclosed-emitter optics seal the emitter behind glass, which makes them more resistant to exactly the conditions patrol officers work in. For more on footprints, see GunOptics' footprint guide.
The holster problem
Duty retention holsters are molded or built to precise dimensions. Every new variable can change fit and retention function:
- Slide shape and optic cut. A different optic height or position may interfere with SLS hoods or holster cutouts.
- Optic model. Enclosed optics are often bulkier than open dots, and optic-ready holsters are cut for specific shapes.
- Weapon light. Light-bearing holsters index off the light, so a different light means a different holster.
Switching checklist
- Confirm agency approval for the gun, optic and light.
- Find the holster maker's official fit listing for that exact combination, not a forum post.
- Test draw and reholster, and confirm retention devices engage every time.
- Qualify with the new setup before carrying it on duty.
- Stock spare parts and train armorers.
If you're staying on Gen 5
That's a reasonable choice. Gen 5 MOS pistols take optics through plates, and duty holster support is mature. For example, the Safariland 6360RDS has a listed fit for the G19 MOS with an X300U.
