The "same manual of arms" argument
Under stress, people fall back on their training. If your duty pistol has no manual safety and your off-duty gun has one, or the slide stop sits somewhere different, you're asking your hands to switch between two sets of habits. Matching control layout and trigger type reduces that risk. That's why many Glock-carrying officers simply carry a G19 off duty (see Glock 17 vs 19).
When slimmer wins
Plainclothes and off-duty life often means lighter clothing and all-day carry. Slim, high-capacity micro-compacts changed the calculation here by offering duty-adjacent capacity in far thinner packages.
Springfield Hellcat Pro OSP
This is the longer-grip, longer-slide version of the Hellcat, cut for an optic (OSP). It's a slim 9mm that shoots more like a compact than a micro. DefensiveHandgun's full review covers it in depth.
Sig P365-XMACRO TACOPS
The XMACRO is the largest-capacity member of the P365 family. The TACOPS package is aimed at duty-adjacent users, so check the listing for included magazines and accessories. The P365 ecosystem of holsters, sights and parts is one of the deepest in concealed carry.
Choosing between them
- Grip and trigger feel. Only your hand can decide.
- Holster support. Confirm the carry method you'll actually use: IWB, AIWB or OWB.
- Optic plan. Both accept dots. Pick one and qualify with it.
- Agency policy on off-duty weapons and ammunition.

Ammo
Carry the same load family you carry on duty where policy allows, such as Federal HST or Gold Dot. Function-test it in the smaller gun, because short barrels can behave differently. See the duty ammo tier list.
Frequently asked questions
Should my off-duty gun match my duty gun?
Matching the manual of arms, such as the same brand, trigger type or control layout, means your duty training carries over. Many officers choose a smaller version of their duty pistol for this reason.
Hellcat Pro or P365-XMACRO?
Both are slim, high-capacity 9mm pistols with optics options. Hold both. Grip texture, trigger feel and holster availability usually decide it.
Do off-duty officers need agency approval?
Many agencies regulate off-duty weapons and ammunition. Check your policy and any qualification requirements.
What about LEOSA?
LEOSA lets qualified current and retired officers carry concealed across state lines, subject to conditions and exceptions. It's detailed and can be misread, so review the statute and your agency's guidance.
